Packing List

With meals and lodging provided, packing for the Camino de Costa Rica is much simpler than for most long-distance hikes. The list below is meant as a guide, not a strict set of rules.

What to bring

The bare essentials packing list.
  • Backpack
Something you are comfortable hiking with and that you have used before.
  • Hiking shoes
Tennis shoes work too, whatever you are comfortable walking and hiking in over long distances
  • Quick Dry Shirts
A mix of comfortable long and short-sleeved shirts.
  • Quick Dry Underwear
A mix of comfortable, athletic/quick dry underwear.
  • Quick Dry Shorts
A few pairs of quick dry shorts.
  • Quick Dry Pants
    Zip-off for extra functionality.
  • Hat and Sunglasses
A hat and sunglasses are a must-have for on the trail.
  • Insect Repellant
Bug spray is recommended for the days we explore forested areas.
  • Sunblock
    Sunscreen is considered a must-have.
  • Waterbottle
Enough for 2-3 liters per day. Some opt for two single-liter bottles instead of a large 2-liter bottle.
  • Quick Dry Towel
For showers and drying off after any creek crossings.
  • Sandals/Water Shoes
Chacos or water shoes for river crossings. After hiking, flip-flops or Crocs are nice to have.
  • Water Filter / Tablets
Most of the water is potable, but these make good backup plans.
  • Personal First Aid
    Moleskin, anti-diarrheal, ibuprofen, etc.
  • Toiletries
    Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, etc.
  • Light Rain Jacket
The weather changes fast in Costa Rica!
  • Warm Clothing
    For the cooler nights.
  • Headlamp
    For reading at night, etc.
  • Phone
For communicating with hosts and navigation
  • Charger
North / Central America style plug
  • Trekking poles
For some hikers this is a must. For others, not so much. Nice to have for Sections 3 and 4. Since they are hard to fly with, these can be rented. See our blog for more info.

For your consideration

The maybe list
  • Sleeping kit
Only if you have booked a campsite that requires this! These are labeled in our accommodations and the host should remind you.
  • Spare battery
Handy when you need it, extra weight when you do not.
  • Binoculars
There is a lot of wildlife in Costa Rica
  • Gaiters
The Mar a Mar recommends gaiters
