What shoes to wear on the Camino de Costa Rica

What shoes should you wear on the Camino de Costa Rica?
It's one of the first questions people ask us. And honestly, it's a good one; the Camino de Costa Rica isn't a European stroll, and the trail throws some different conditions at you than most hikers are used to.
Here's what we've learned from talking with a lot of people who've done it and from our own experience.
Breathable trail runners are your best bet
Hoka Speedgoats, Altra Lone Peaks, Asics trail runners — these come up again and again from hikers who've finished the route happy with their feet. What they have in common: good cushioning, breathable mesh, and they dry fast. That last part matters more than people expect.
Skip the Gore-Tex. It sounds like a good idea, but in tropical heat and humidity your feet sweat no matter what, and when waterproof shoes get wet they stay wet for a long time. Mesh trail runners soaked in a river crossing are usually dry by morning. Gore-Tex ones aren't.
Cushioning is important
The muddy jungle sections get all the attention, but the gravelly farm roads are what really test your footwear. They're hard, uneven, and long. We've heard from hikers who ended up with painful blisters on the soles of their feet from shoes without enough underfoot protection. If you're choosing between two pairs, go with the one that has more cushion.
Bring something for the river crossings
Don't skip this. The indigenous zone has river crossings, and going barefoot on the rocks is how people get hurt. You don't need anything fancy — Crocs or a cheap pair of sandals strapped to your pack work fine. Swap them at the riverbank, keep your main shoes dry.
Do you need two pairs?
If your luggage is being transferred between stages, a backup pair is worth it — you can alternate on wet days. If you're carrying your own pack, probably not. Keep it light.
The short version: wear trail runners you've already broken in, make sure they have decent cushioning, and pack something for the rivers. That's really it.
